About AMERA International

AMERA UK, now AMERA International, is the acronym for Africa and Middle East Refugee Assistance. It was founded as a UK Charity in January 2003 (Charity No. 1098788) to provide pro bono legal aid for refugees in countries where such services are non-existent or limited and where legal representation might assist them in actualizing their rights. It has now changed its name to AMERA International and will be developing the focus of its work to issues that continue to support the provision of legal assistance to refugees globally and in close cooperation with the information portal for lawyers, founded by Barbara Harrell-Bond.

From its beginning, AMERA UK concentrated on raising funds for the Refugee Law Project, a department of the Faculty of Law, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. AMERA Egypt, which became the exemplary refugee legal aid organization in Cairo, Egypt, was able to work closely with the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Department at the American University in Cairo (AUC) that offers an Master’s degree in refugee studies and annually provides an intensive course in refugee law.

AMERA Egypt ceased operating in Egypt in 2013. The provision of legal assistance work that used to be done at AMERA Egypt is now being done at the offices of the Egyptian Foundation for Refugee Rights and at StARS, St. Andrews Church. The Refugee Law Project – now independent from AMERA UK funding – has expanded greatly, having offices adjacent to some camps as well as in Kampala.

AMERA International is now winding up the activities of AMERA UK, and developing a new focus for its work.
